Thanks to our 25 (including little ones) volunteers that came out in force on this fairly cool but super humid and rainy day, we were able to give out supplies and assistance to over 155 Austinites!!!
Thank you to the countless folks that donated their time, effort, and supplies to make this giveaway happen successfully. Our giveaway recap post would not be complete if we did not give a huge thank you to Support the Girls - Austin for giving us so how many feminine hygiene products that we should be well-stocked for December's giveaway, too.
Of special note, we had a visitor volunteer visiting us from the Humanists of Rhode Island. He only had good things to say about his experience (at least that we heard, lol) at the giveaway and we welcome him, or anyone else from HRI, to join us if they ever find themselves in our neighborhood again!!
Our clothing isle (the tables designated for solely clothing so people can peruse at their leisure) was quite the frenzy. Along with 2 large bags of clothes from Airman's Attic on Lackland Air Force Base, there were donations of men's and women's professional clothing, including slacks, jackets and blouses.
In a surprise to us, an eager rep from Church Under the Bridge (Mt. Zion Church) came over with pre-made bags of full-size toiletries. After we verified they knew who our group was , we incorporated their donations onto our tables for distribution. It's not the first time this type of exchange has occurred. In the past, we have donated soap and tissue to the church that provides a portable toilet and hand washing station; also, we have received toiletries and packaged food items from various religious groups.
Our next giveaway is December 3rd (FB event link below) As the weather gets colder, our focus will turn to coats, jackets, and blankets. We'll make a blog post soon about different ways you can help us to distribute 175 blankets to keep folks warm during the Texas winter.
Thanks again to everyone and we'll see you for the next one!!!
