This Labor Day giveaway was a wild ride!! The heat and humid were unforgiving today, but the sheer number of folks that came out was staggering. All told, about 273 bags of aid were given out to our community today. We're not sure if it just the was the holiday weekend that added to the number of recipients, but 30 volunteers stood strong to lend a hand. Not only did we have 4 gallons of french vanilla coffee, but, to cool off in this heat, 5 gallons of cold Kool - Aid were also put out for consumption. Both were COMPLETELY gone even before the giveaway was over, so we'll be looking about what we can do about filling that gap for next time. A big shoutout to the Atheist Community of Austin for providing the coffee, cups and sugar for this giveaway (as well allowing us to brew in the library this morning 😍). No recap would be complete without including a big thank-you to the I Support the Girls Austin chapter for coming out with feminine hygiene products. They are always amazing and we couldn't do it without them. The request we had last month for tweezers was well received, as almost all 200 were spoken for. We also had a voter deputy registrar (VDR) helping to register folks to vote. We'll have 3 VDRs at the next giveaway Clothes were sooooo plentiful this time around, and with so many awesome volunteers working them, 3 full tables of clothes allowed people to spread out to search at their leisure. In addition, we received bags, ties, belts and backpacks, duffle bags and sunglasses. This was an amazing day, not only with the amount of donations that were received but also with the amount of volunteers that made it happen. Thank everyone for coming out and spreading the word. The next giveaway will be on October 7th @ 9:15am. Keep a lookout for an event soon once the inventory is completed in the next few days.
